Universiade Flame continues its march through Tatarstan

On June 25, the main symbol of the World University Games visited four towns in the Republic of Tatarstan: Novosheshminsk, Cheremshan, Aksubaevo and Nurlat. Thousands of residents of these settlements welcomed the Universiade Flame on the path of the Torch Relay. A total of 72 Torchbearers carried the main symbol of the World University Games in the streets of the towns of Tatarstan.

Novosheshminsk was the first of the day to take the Torch. The honour of carrying the Universiade Torch was granted to 10 residents of the town.

“We are happy to greet the Universiade Flame today in Novosheshminsk. It is no coincidence that the World University Games will be held in Kazan because the republic's leadership has paid considerable attention to university sport. In our area, thanks to the support of President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, modern sports facilities were built,” said Head of the Novosheshminsky Municipal District, Rinat Fasakhov. “I wish everyone prosperity, and to the athletes, I wish you lofty accomplishments. Onward to the Universiade!"

In Cheremshan, the Torch Relay started in the square at the Youth Centre. The length of the route was about 3,000 metres.

"Today we held in our hands a symbol of brotherhood and unity of the people of our planet: the Flame of the World University Games. I would like to believe that after such a massive celebration, more and more people in Cheremshan will lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise. I hope that the Universiade Flame has remained in your hearts and that its sparks radiated goodness and joy," said Cheremshan Municipal District Adviser Amir Mugizov.

Aksubaevo, which took the Torch Relay next, became the 18th Tatarstan town to be visited by the main symbol of the World University Games. And 19 residents of Aksubaevo were Torchbearers in the Relay.

"I am very pleased to be at this celebration of sport, youth and health. In our area a lot of attention is devoted to sport, and young people lead a healthy lifestyle, so it is particularly gratifying that the Universiade Flame came to the Aksubaevsky District," said Head of the Aksubaevsky Municipal District, Kamil Gilmanov.

The final town of the day to accept the Torch Relay was Nurlat. The team of Torchbearers there consisted of 31 town residents, including students, athletes, volunteers, representatives of the municipal administration, and partner companies of the World University Games in Kazan. The lighting of the Town Cauldron completed the run. Guests of honour at the celebration were Republic of Tatarstan State Council deputy Ilgiz Salikhov, Head of Office of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare in the Republic of Tatarstan Marina Patyashina, Head of the Nurlatsky Municipal District Nail Sharapov and Head of the Executive Committee of the Nurlatsky Municipal District Ramil Kashapov.

"In a few days Kazan will welcome the World Summer University Games. The town has spent a long time in careful preparation for this. Many sports facilities were constructed, and adults and children will play sports in them in the future. Nurlat today is one of the centres of university sport, and I want to express gratitude for the fact that our town was visited by the Universiade Flame," said Nail Sharapov.

"I am very pleased to welcome Nurlat residents because Nurlat is a young, active and sport-loving town, and today's meeting of the Universiade Flame demonstrates that. Very soon, Kazan will become the centre of world university sport and attract attention not only from sports organisations but also from such industries as tourism and business," said Marina Patyashina.

At the end of the ceremony Patyashina handed Nurlat's town leaders a souvenir torch.

The next to welcome the Torch Relay in Tatarstan will be residents of Chistopol, Rybnaya Sloboda and Mamadysh. The Universiade Flame will arrive there on June 26.

The Universiade Torch Lighting Ceremony took place at Paris-Sorbonne University where the first ‘World Student Games’ were held in 1923. The historic moment in the Torch Relay arrived when the Universiade Flame embarked on a round-the-world voyage aboard the world’s largest bark - the tall ship Sedov. On July 15th, the Torch was handed over to a team of navy cadets – the Keepers of the Universiade Flame. Travelling aboard the bark Sedov, the Torch covered 45,000 nautical miles and repeated the route of greatest sailors of all times.

The Russian leg of the Universiade Torch Relay started off on January 25, on Russian Students' Day. Travelling from east to west, the Flame is carried through Russia’s 30 top student cities such as Khabarovsk, Yakutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk, Stavropol, Pyatigorsk, Sochi, Rostov-on-Don, Saint Petersburg, Vladimir, Moscow, Perm, Izhevsk, Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Yoshkar-Ola, Cheboksary, Ulyanovsk, Saransk, Penza, Saratov, Samara, Orenburg, Ufa and passes through 43 municipal districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, finishing its odyssey in Kazan on July 6, on the opening day of the 2013 Summer Universiade. 2,013 Torchbearers will carry the Universiade Torch as it will make its way all over the country.
