Summer Universiade Flame lit in Kazan Arena

The Flame of the 27th Summer Universiade was lit at the Kazan Arena Stadium during the Games Opening Ceremony. The lighting ceremony was the concluding stage of the Universiade Torch Relay, which lasted 359 days.

The Flame of the World University Games was carried into the stadium by famous athletes: 1961 Summer Universiade champion Yuri Funikov, world junior hockey championship medallist Nail Yakupov, two-time world volleyball champion Yekaterina Gamova, four-time Paralympic champion in cross-country skiing and biathlon Irek Zaripov and Olympic judo champion Takhir Khaibulaev.

The Universiade in Kazan will set a record in terms of the number of sports included in the programme (27) and the number of participants (more than 13,000). Also, 351 medal events will be held at the Universiade.
