“When the fans support you so much, it is impossible not to hear them, even when fully focused during the fight. This is a very significant contribution to my victory, the support was just crazy. To be honest, I did not expect that in Kazan we’d have this kind of support. Our sport has been only added to the Universiade programme, it is not an Olympic sport. So I thought that people would not care much. But experience has shown that people know Sambo, and support us. Many thanks to them for that,” Kiryukhin told R-Sport.

According to the Universiade champion, the final battle was “difficult” for him, but he expected that. “We're not fighting against this opponent for the first time, so we know each other well. My coach and I figured him out tactically. The victory was not easy, but according to plan. He, of course, had some surprises, but I tried to anticipate them, and apply my own prepared countermoves. I am fully satisfied with this victory. I was fully psyched up only for the gold, as I always want to win,” said Kiryukhin.
