The 12 gold medals won by Russia’s sambo team at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan were fully expected, said President of the All-Russian and European Federation of Sambo Sergei Eliseev to R-Sport.

“As a team we targeted five gold medals each for the men and women’s teams. We counted on such a result, and it was realised. That we took an extra two gold medals was also expected. The fact that this was on home territory helped. Many of our teammates were overcome by positive emotions. Competing in such a stadium, it was impossible to perform differently. Thus, we took 12 gold medals,” said Eliseev to R-Sport. He particularly noted the performance of Uali Kurzhev, who won in the 74 kg weight category. “It is rare when something surprises me. I liked the performance of Kurzhev, he fought well. That was real sambo where you have throws, submission holds and locks. Sergei Kiruchin also did well in the 82 kg weight category. Denis Davydov in the 68 kg weight category showed excellent spirit and male character. These guys performed well,” said Eliseev.
