Survey: Universiade winners owe their victories to coaches, fans and referees

According to Russian citizens, the success of the national team at the Universiade in Kazan is explained by the athletes' serious approach to training, strong financing, domestic venues, support of fans, judges, and Olympic champions, the All-Russian Centre for Public Opinion Studies (VTsIOM) announced on Wednesday.

Soon after the end of the Universiade, respondents were asked to name two reasons why the Russian team won the record-breaking number of gold medals at the World University Summer Games in Kazan. 40% of respondents said that the athletes have reached such results thanks to a special training programme and a serious approach to training. Nearly one-third of the respondents (14%) explained the victories by the inclusion of Olympic champions in the team. "There are a lot of those who believe that the key to success lied in the attention given to the sports sector in the country as a whole (29%), as well as the support of the fans (27%) and the desire to win (24%),"  says the release.

It should be noted that the overwhelming majority - 69% of respondents - see the Universiade as a source for national pride. And 71% of Russian citizens kept track of the competitions. The survey was carried out among 1,600 people in 130 settlements across the country. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
