Kazan gets ready to host Russia-Luxemburg football game

On September 6, this Friday, for the first time ever Kazan will play host to the Russian football team's home game. The match against Luxemburg is part of the qualifying round for the FIFA 2014 World Cup, therefore a win at the Central Stadium is absolutely crucial.

It makes perfect sense that Kazan was selected as the host for such a key match. A little over a month ago the capital of Tatarstan showed the whole world that it is capable of hosting important sporting events. Also, Kazan’s organisational experience is not the only factor, but also its infrastructure (the reconstructed Central Stadium), the revamped Kazan International Airport and the intermodal line allowing fans from all around to quickly and comfortably get from the city’s outer limits right to the stadium for the game is important too. Additionally, one should know that Kazan is one of the 11 Russian host cities during the 2018 World Cup.

The Russian Football Union notes that it expects both well-coordinated match organisation and incredible support from Russia’s fans. "We saw how during the Universiade the Central Stadium was filled to capacity with fans, which was one of the reasons why Russian athletes performed so outstandingly. We are sure that the fans will contribute to Russia's victory in this absolutely crucial match."

Fabio Capello’s team is currently 2nd in its qualifying group, trailing Portugal by 2 points, but it has one game left. On Monday, September 2, the Russian team started to prepare for the upcoming match. Our team held an evening training session at the Eduard Streltsov Stadium in Moscow. Fabio Cappello’s team worked out for less than an hour and it was merely a recovery session. Massimo Nerri, the team’s physical therapist, led some running and stretching exercises, after which the football players spent a bit of time on ball work individually and in groups. Defender, Alexander Anyukov, sat out this session, but he should join the team on Tuesday.

One should note that two players from Rubin FC are set to represent Russia in Kazan, goalkeeper Sergey Ryzhikov and halfback, Alexander Riazantsev. The Russian roster is as follows: goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Gabulov (Dynamo Moscow), Sergei Ryzhikov (Rubin); defenders Alexander Anyukov (Zenit), Aleksei Berezutski, Vasili Berezutski and Sergei Ignashevich, George Shennikov (all from CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Granat (Dynamo Moscow), Vitaly Dyakov (Rostov), Alexey Kozlov (Kuban), Dmitry Kombarov (Spartak Moscow), midfielders Igor Denisov (Dynamo Moscow), Alan Dzagoev (CSKA Moscow), Denis Glushakov (Spartak Moscow), Alexander Ryazantsev (Rubin), Victor Fayzulin, Roman Shirokov (both from Zenit) forwards Vladimir Bystrov, Aleksandr Kerzhakov, Oleg Shatov (all from Zenit), Alexey Ionov, Alexander Kokorin, Fyodor Smolov (all from Dynamo Moscow) and Alexander Samedov (Lokomotiv Moscow).
