Kazan to host 2014 World Fair Play Awards

On July 17-19 Kazan will play host to a series of events related to the World Fair Play Awards. Jenő Kamuti, President of the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP), arrived on a working visit to Kazan to take a look at the city's preparations for the events. Today, May 31, he had a meeting with Prime Minister of Tatarstan Ildar Khalikov.

The World Fair Play Award is a special code of ethics in the sports community that is bestowed on athletes, managers of sports organisations, media representatives, and sports fans for displaying nobility in play, promoting humanism, high morals in sports and life, rejecting all forms of violence against opponents, and performing charitable activities.

Extending his welcome to Jenő Kamuti, Tatarstan's Prime Minister said that Kazan has been the sports capital of Russia for a number of years now. Kazan's sports clubs repeatedly earned championship titles in a range of sports, i.e. football, ice hockey, volleyball, field hockey, bandy.

According to the Tatarstan President's press office, Ildar Khalikov briefed Jenő Kamuti on the World University Games that were staged in Kazan last summer. He also mentioned that apart from the Universiade Kazan hosted an array of European championships in Olympic sports and due to this an extensive infrastructure had been constructed to accommodate upcoming and future high-profile sporting events.

"Kazan's chances of hosting the awards increased considerably after staging the Universiade. This is very important to hold the ceremony in the city which is not only known for its sports achievements, but also hosted a major international sporting event," said Jenő Kamuti to reporters after the meeting with Ildar Khalikov. He also added: "The ceremony will be a great opportunity for young people to experience the spirit of Fair Play and to meet their idols who follow the principles of fair play."

The World Fair Play Awards will take place in Kazan from July 18-19. On July 18, the Korston Mall and Hotel will host the International Congress "Fair Play: Honour and Achievements in the Sports". On July 19, the award ceremony will be held in the Pyramid Culture and Entertainment Complex. The names of nominees are kept strictly confidential.

According to Director General of the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects, Azat Kadyrov, the preparation for the event is currently in full swing. President of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Gianni Merlo has already confirmed his participation in the event. A photo exhibition, titled 'Nobility in Sports', will be held on the sidelines of the project. Thanks to this photo project, visitors to Kazan will have a chance to get an insight into Tatarstan's athletic achievements. Members of the congress will also host masterclasses for trainees of children and youth sports schools.

Azat Kadyrov also said that the Fair Play events will coincide with the Fencing World Championships scheduled to be held in Kazan this July. "Fencing is one of the most noble and beautiful sports, and our guest, Mr. Kamuti, has a lot to do with this sport," said the CEO of the Executive Directorate.

Jenő Kamuti is a  famous Hungarian foil fencer and surgeon cardiologist, two-time silver medallist of the Olympic Games, world champion (1957), Universiade champion (1959, 1961, 1963, 1965), World Cup winner (1973), winner of dozens of competitions, former member of the Hungarian national team (1956-1976), former president of the European Fencing Federation. Since 2005 he's been holding the post of Secretary General of the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
