World Fencing Championships: Table of 64 line-up decided in sabre events

The preliminary rounds of the men's and women's sabre events concluded today in Kazan.

The line-up of the final direct elimination table of 64 was decided on Day 1 of the World Fencing Championships. The Russian fencers did not compete in the preliminaries as they had entered the list of top 16 fencers in the FIE World Rankings and today Veniamin RESHETNIKOV, Alexey YAKIMENKO, Kamil IBRAGIMOV and Nikolay KOVALEV only watched as their future opponents were making their way to the next round.

KOVALEV will take on Benjamin IGOE (USA), IBRAGIMOV will encounter Renzo AGRESTA (BRA), YAKIMENKO will fence Andras SZATMARI (HUN) and RESHETNIKOV will fight for a spot in the round of 32 against Iulian TEODOSIU (ROU).

All sabre bouts will take place on July 18 with gold medals being contested at the end of the day.

The preliminary rounds of the men's and women's foil events will be held on July 16. Russia's Timur SAFIN and Alexey KHOVANSKIY will try to secure spots in the main draw. Thanks to their high rankings, Dmitry RIGIN and Alexey CHEREMISINOV get an automatic bye. The same thing can be said about the Russian female fencers Inna DERIGLAZOVA, Larisa KOROBEYNIKOVA, Diana YAKOVLEVA and Yulia BIRYUKOVA who automatically progress to the final direct elimination table of 64.
