World Fencing Championships: Day 2 determines T64 participants in women's foil event

The Russian female foil fencers qualified for the next round and will take on opponents from Canada, Brazil and Hong Kong.


Female foil fencers stepped onto the pistes of the Tennis Academy on Day 2 of the World Fencing Championships in Kazan. In the preliminary rounds they competed for a bye into the table of 64. Russia's foil fencers Inna DERIGLAZOVA, Larisa KOROBEYNIKOVA, Diana YAKOVLEVA and Yulia BIRYUKOVA were exempt from the preliminary rounds due to their top 16 world rankings. 

Their opponents in the round of 64 are fencers from Canada, Brazil and Hong Kong. DERIGLAZOVA will face Eleanor HARVEY (CAN) while Larisa KOROBEYNIKOVA will take on Alanna GOLDIE (CAN). Diana YAKOVLEVA will encounter Marianna DAFFNER (BRA) with Yulia BIRYUKOVA fencing Yan Wai LIU (HKG).


The final bouts in the women's foil event are scheduled for July 19. The world championship crown in this discipline belongs to Arianna ERRIGO (ITA), while Inna DERIGLAZOVA holds the bronze medal position. 

On Thursday the tournament will continue with the women's epee events. Russian fencers Lyubov SHUTOVA and Tatiana GUDKOVA will fight their way to the table of 64. Yana ZVEREVA and Violetta KOLOBOVA advanced to the next round automatically thanks to their high rankings. Competition begins at 9.00 local time.
