Phil Esposito's stick to be put up for auction during Hockey Legends match in Kazan

A charity hockey game featuring the world ice hockey stars and the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov has collected a full house - the stands were full and busting minutes before the start of the match. The game was preceded by a pre-match press conference, which was attended by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov, Deputy Director General of the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects Farid Abdulganiev, organiser of World Stars hockey matches and former member of the US Olympic men's ice hockey team Scott MacPherson, Honoured Master of Sports of Russia (1993) and world champion (1993) Alexey Yashin.

Vladimir Leonov noted that the competition venue - Sport Palace - was chosen for a good reason. "We love and appreciate the Sport Palace and its leadership. Back in the day it was the most popular venue. I myself came here and did figure skating. Therefore, the Sport Palace is dear to me," said Vladimir Leonov, as quoted by the Tatar-inform agency.

He reminded that the world's hockey legends will get out on the rink. The world ice hockey stars team is composed of Mark Kampel, Tim Driscoll, Scott MacPherson, Milan Nový, Paul Stewart, Sergey Gimaev, Alexander Semak, Alexey Yashin, Dmitry Yashin, Andrey Kovalenko, Jonathan Sparrow, Bruce Boudreau, Pyotr Lukyanov, Grigory Gulevsky and Denis Pakhomov.

The Tatarstan team included 24 people, in particular, President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Tatarstan Minister of Economy Midkhat Shagiakhmetov and others.

In the lobby of the Sport Palace, the organisers held a charity auction where sticks and autographed hockey jerseys and other pieces of memorabilia were auctioned.   "Also, an auction will be held between the two halves of the match where Phil Esposito's signed legendary 1972 stick will be auctioned," said Vladimir Leonov. All the money raised will go to the charity. Vladimir Leonov also noted that these days Kazan hosted an array of events, including masterclasses hosted by hockey stars for trainees of Tatarstan's sports schools. "It is on the events like this that the future of the country depends," he stressed.

The match was organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Executive Directorate for Sports Projects and Ice Hockey Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan. "We are aware that world stars are visiting our city, and did our best to cover all issues related to the organisation and logistics of the event and to ensure that their stay in Kazan will be as convenient and comfortable as possible," said Farid Abdulganiev.

The organiser of World Stars hockey matches and former member of the US Olympic men's ice hockey team Scott MacPherson expressed hope that the match will be exciting and action-packed.
