World ice hockey stars and Ak Bars veterans play charity match in Kazan

A charity match featuring the teams of world ice hockey stars and ice hockey veterans took place at the skating rink of the Sport Palace, Kazan. President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, made an appearance in the latter team.

Legendary Soviet, Russian and foreign ice hockey players such as Scott MacPherson, Andrey Kovalenko, and Alexey Yashin arrived in Kazan to participate in the fundraising match. Ttarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Tatarstan Minister of Economy Midkhat Shagiakhmetov, former Ak Bars Kazan team players, who now play as amateurs, and others took part in the match as part of the team of ice hockey veterans. 

Shortly before the match, the audience was addressed by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan, Vladimir Leonov. "On behalf of the President of Tatarstan and Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, I want to welcome you to our city. This tournament was first held in 2008, and today it is hosted by the sports capital of Russia, Kazan, for the first time. We hope that we will be holding this event in the cities of our republic every year," he said.

Legendary Canadian ice hockey player Phil Esposito, who was not able to come to Kazan, sent a video message which was played to the audience prior to the game. Esposito expressed hope that he will be able to visit the capital of Tatarstan in the future, the Tatarstan President's Press Office reports. 

The match ended in a 5-5 draw, and the outcome of the game was decided by a penalty shootout, which resulted in the world ice hockey stars' victory.
