12th WUC Rowing: Smirnova misses out on victory

Four rowers reached the women's Single Sculls Final B on Day 2 of the 12th World University Rowing Championship in Kazan.

Russia's Alexandra SMIRNOVA took control of the race from the very start but she faced a tough competition and was eventually pipped into third place (9:02.19). She ended up in the 9th position in the overall standings. Peta WHITE of Australia finished first (8:59.50, 7th position), Eeva KARPPINEN of Finland is second (9:01.81, 8th position).

The men's Single Sculls Final B had no Russian rowers in its line up. The race turned out be a real challenge for Mohammad Naim MOHAMD SUPIAN (MAS) who finished a long way behind the rest of the competitors. He crossed the line only two minutes after Cristofer HILLEP of Estonia who came fourth. The top three spots in Final B were claimed by Jakob HOUSKA of the Czech Republic (7:53.67, 7th position in the overall standings), Mykolas MASILIONIS of Lithuania (7:58.40, 8th position), Jean-Benoit VALSCHAERTS of Belgium (8:02.91, 9th position).
