27th Summer Universiade in Kazan,

July 6-17 2013

We want to come back next year!

The press conference with the winners of the men’s Lightweight Single Sculls at the 12th World University Rowing Championship took place at the Rowing Centre.

As we have earlier reported, Peter Mihaly Galambos (HUN) took gold in this discipline, Bartlomiej Lesniak (POL) won silver and Michael Schmid (SUI) took bronze. All the athletes express gratitude for the excellent organisation of the championship. The Rowing Centre made a good impression on them as well. The participants of the championship spoke highly of the hospitality of Kazan. They would like to come back here once more, they said. The Polish athlete was amazed by kindness and politeness of the volunteers, and he promised to come back next year for the 2013 Summer Universiade.

What universities do are represent?
M. Schmid: I’m a student of the University of Bern, Switzerland.
P. Galambos: I represent Budapest University of Technology and Economics where I’m studying at the faculty of economics.
B. Lesniak: My university is the School of Banking and Management in Krakow.

Is the university sport developed in your countries?
M. Schmid: Well, in Switzerland we pay attention to it, but not so much as other countries. I hope it will change for better.
P. Galambos: Hard to say. If we’re talking about rowing, it’s only a club sport in Hungary. I, for one, practice at the club that’s 30 km away from Krakow.
B. Lesniak: it’s great that rowing is developing in Poland. There are a lot of big high class tournaments there.

How was your season? Not homesick yet?
M. Schmid: It was a long season. I had to compete at qualification for the Olympics, and in other competitions unrelated to the Olympics. I’m tired and although I like it here, there’s a great atmosphere in Kazan, I quite want to go home. But I’ll try and come back for the Universiade.
P. Galambos: I’ve had a long season as well. I took part in the qualification for the Olympics, two Regata Cups. Next week I’m competing in the European Championship and then I’m back to my studies.
B. Lesniak: This year’s been easier than the last. Last year I tried competing in the heavyweight category; there were a lot of competitions. This year I’ve come back to lightweight. I took part in several world championships and many other tournaments.
