Tatarstan targets gold in rhythmic gymnastics group competitions

Day 1 of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Group Championship comes to a close as groups complete their performances in the qualification.

According to preliminary results, St Petersburg's group ended up in the first position with 28.000, ahead of Moscow (27.800) and Tatarstan (27.550). Gymnasts of our republic have expected such good results: "It's the first serious competitions of this scale for us and today we did everything we could. We've been performing together only since the New Year." According to the gymnasts, competing on home soil has its advatnages and disadvantages: on the one hand, you feel support; on the other, there is a huge responsibility. And indeed, Tatarstan's group was the only team that was welcomed with such great enthusiasm by the audience. Speaking about their expectations for the tournament, the young gymnasts said: "We try not to make plans too early, we just do what we are required to do." The main action will unfold tomorrow and the day after tomorrow as the gap in scores between the teams is insignificant and the leaders can swap places any time. As we earlier reported, Ekaterina Selezneva of the Moscow Region is on top after the first qualification day with 54.450, followed by Anastasia Kadochnikova (52.200) and Adel Galina (52.000). Day 2 will feature the clubs and ribbon events at the Russian Cup and the ribbons and hoops events in the group competitions. Plus, competitors will showcase performances that meet new regulations coming into effect in 2013. But the highlight of the second competition day is the solemn opening ceremony that will see the attendance of President of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Irina Viner-Usmanova, silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games Daria Dmitrieva, as well as Olympic rhythmic gymnastics group champions Anastasia Bliznyuk, Ksenia Dudkina, Uliana Donskova, Alina Makarenko, Anastasia Nazarenko, and Karolina Sevastynova. The Russian Cup victory ceremonies will take place in the evening.
