Volleyball players from Russia and Ukraine hold friendly match

Before the Summer Universiade’s official volleyball tournament starts, the finalists of the previous World University Games in Shenzhen came out at the court.

The Russian team’s volleyball players won a friendly match with the Ukrainian team. The match was held in the Saint Petersburg Volleyball Cenetre on Wednesday and ended up in a final score of 3-1 (23:25, 25:20, 25:23, 25:17) in favour of Sergey Shlyapnikov’s team.

After the match, Sergey Skripka, the Ukrainian team’s coach, noted that the players under his training did not have enough strength. “We arrived at 6 a.m., having no proper rest, without any training we played already in the evening a match with a strong rival. It can’t be said that we found out the reality by own experience. It helped us to find our weak spots we will correct. But, in general, I am satisfied with the game," Skripka confessed. "Our goal at these Games is to counter Russia in the final. Although we have only three players from that team left, while Russia has no players. We will stake on the seniors and the young players, competing at the Russian Championship. The youth is perspective, we have who will play.”

As for our group rivals, the Ukrainian coach remarked the Latvian team. “It is an underdog that can surprise. Nobody staked on us during two years, so, now Latvia can face the same situation. The Thai team is worthy," Skripka added. "They won the US team and made it to the top eight best teams in China. It is amazing to play with Japan. The subgroup is not, of course, 'death zone', but the teams are equal to one another and each of them has the chance to win. The Games are expected to be unpredictable. Everything will depend on the first matches.”

Dmitry Kovalev, the Russian team’s captain and setter, told that his team yielded the first set because of its own failures. “We did not play well together with the players, so it was a lesson for us to learn,” the volleyballer noted. He evaluated his own physical form of 70%, and added: “It will be of 100% when the Games will officially begin.”
