Sergey Shlyapnikov: Russian volleyball players are objectively stronger than the Americans

Russian University team in volleyball is at a higher level than the U.S. team, Russian head coach Sergey Shlyapnikov told R-Sport Agency.

The Russian national team on Sunday defeated Hong Kong 3-0 (26:24, 25:12, 25:15) in the second round game of the group stage at the Universiade in Kazan. In the third round of the tournament, which will take place on Monday, the Russians will play against Team USA. “In general, the Americans have a good team. Of course, it is different from their main team. All University teams are different. Their teams have a general profile, but there are differences, and it all depends on the level of the actual performers. Objectively speaking, we are stronger than the U.S. team. Our task in the next few matches is simply to work on our teamwork, and prepare for the more important matches,” Shlyapnikov told the correspondent from R-Sport.

According to him, the Russian national team now “does not have it all together yet, in terms of teamwork”. “In this regard, we have a significant advantage (over our rivals), but we have not implemented it yet. These kinds of connections need a long time to develop, and unfortunately, we did not have this time. Therefore, during the tournament, by training and playing the game, we will be able to develop these connections, especially in the middle of the grid, where we have such tall players like (Oleg) Sychev (Artem) Volvich, and (Dmitry) Shcherbinin. When we strengthen this area, then it will be easier for us to play around the edges,” said Shlyapnikov.
