Maria Kiseleva: Romashina likes being leader of team

In the opinion of three-time Olympic champion in synchronised swimming and the Kazan 2013 Ambassador Maria Kiseleva, the Russian team was the main favourite of the Summer Games 2013 in Kazan from the start.

The Russian synchronised swimmer Svetlana Romashina, who has won gold medals in solo and duet competitions, is the leader of the team, but she cannot be compared with the celebrated synchronised swimmer Natalia Ishchenko, Kiseleva believes.

"Comparing the solos of Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina can't be done, because Natalia, who is not making an appearance, was one of the best solo swimmers in the history of synchronised swimming," Kiseleva observed. "It was very difficult for Svetlana to go out and do a solo after Natalia Ishchenko, but she managed. She is the clear leader and enjoys it."

Kiseleva admitted that she had liked how Romashina performed in a duet with Svetlana Kolesnichenko. "They are great girls," Kiseleva said. "I liked how they worked together, how they handled the composition and how they so precisely handled their premiere as the country's foremost duettists."

The two-time Olympic winner thanked FISU and the organisers of the Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan for having included synchronised swimming in the programme of the Summer Games 2013. "It is joy and happiness for us," the celebrated synchronised swimmer stated. "The girls are happy because they have many new things. The main thing is that we are holding onto our brand and proving that the team is competitive."

According to Kiseleva, if she were still performing, there is no question that she would have participated in the Summer Universiade 2013. "It seems to me that it's a source of joy for athletes, since you are performing in front of capacity crowds that support you. Although, of course, this means additional worry and responsibility."

Kiseleva stated that her status as the Kazan 2013 Ambassador is allowing her to share her experience and energy with the young athletes. "It's a great pleasure for me," Maria said. "I like to share my experience with young athletes, to fill them with energy and be filled by them. I like this feeling very much."

In addition, Kiseleva noted the professional organisation of the 27th World Summer University Games: "I believe that they are all great people. Enormous work has been done, and we see the result of this work today."
