Popova: Russian athletes were hindered by fatigue in the match against the Czech Republic

The Russian beach volleyball team’s Svetlana Popova said that she and Maria Prokopeva were hindered by fatigue in their beach volleyball playoff match against the Czech duo Carolina Rehackova and Michala Kvapilova.

The Russians were able to win over the Czechs at the tie-break with a score of 2-1 (21:16, 17:21, 15:13), thus advancing to the next round.

“Our fatigue really got in our way. We played the Brazilians just yesterday evening in the playoffs, and it was also a nerve-wracking match, very difficult,” R-Sport quotes the athletes.

“We came home, by the time that we ate it was already two in the morning. It was hard to get up and to wake up, because we didn’t sleep all that much. That’s why the game was so difficult, but in the end, we won against ourselves,” Popova said. The Russian athlete noted the strength of the opponent, who had the lead for most of the tie-break. “This is a world-class team. This has been our toughest opponent at the Universiade. The leader in the Czech pair is a lefty. It’s just a little bit uncomfortable to play against left-handed opponents. You need to do certain types of movements, a certain way to get under the ball, that’s why it was hard, at first, to catch her on the block,” said the athlete, who also pointed out that the wind had picked up at the beach. “The wind has some effect on the game. It’s a bit easier to win on the side that’s against the wind, the serve just flies off, the return gets more difficult and so does the attack as a whole,” Popova added.
