Marichev did not like his team's playing in Russia's opening match against United States

Volleyball matches take place on July 10 at the 27th World Summer University Games in Kazan.

Head coach of the Russian national volleyball Yuri Marichev said he was not pleased with his team's performance in their opening match against the US team. On Wednesday, the Russians defeated the US team 3-0 (25:16, 25:23, 25:19) in the third match of Group A at the Universiade. In the group stage they scored three wins in three matches, having previously won against the Czech Republic and Polish teams.

"Today we needed a single game to get into the playoffs in first place. So we had planned in advance to make changes to the team during the second part. The substitute players, like everyone else, had trained hard for the tournament, and they also wanted to play. At the start of the game the girls got quite alarmed but, in the end, we give the opponent a taste of excitement, we went a little bit wild. So Natalia Obmochaeva and Ekaterina Pankova returned to the pitch. But then the third part of our game was nothing extraordinary. I wasn't too happy with this first game," Marichev said to reporters.

"The Americans have a heavy serve, which seems to be a hallmark of this team” quoted an expert from R-Sport. “That's why we could not play the ball the way we would have liked: fast and with combinations. We basically need to go against every opponent and play like we are playing against Brazil's Olympic team." Russia's rival at the quarterfinal will be determined later.
