Minnikhanov congratulates belt wrestling team on victory in Kazan

The Russian belt wrestling team's success at the Universiade in Kazan is a worthy contribution to the development of a new all-Russian type of sport, said President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.

The President's press service said that Minnikhanov congratulated the Russian belt wrestling team on their brilliant performance at the World University Summer Games. This is the first time that belt wrestling has been included in the Summer Universiade's programme. Russian athletes won every gold medal in the sport at the Games. Five of the seven champions - Nafis Minnebayev, Ildar Giniyatullin, Ilnar Galiyev, Ilnur Murtazin and Renat Akhmetshin - are Tatarstan natives.

"You masterfully won gold for the Russian team, such a commanding performance confirmed the authority of the Tatar school of belt wrestling and the excellent level of coaching," Minnikhanov's press service quoted the president as saying. "This achievement is a good claim on the future and a worthy contribution to the development of a new all-Russian type of sport."
