Volleyball. Preview of competition day

The quarterfinals will in women's volleyball at the Summer Universiade 2013 will take place on July 12.

Besides the quarterfinals, the first matches for ninth through 16th places will be held the same day.
In the pairings involving teams fighting for those spots, the USA-Slovakia contest stands out.
The Russians have a quarterfinal match against the team representing Chinese Taipei, the second-place team in their group. Also, the top team in Group C will go up against Poland. One other bigtime match-up will take place at St. Petersburg Volleyball Centre, that being Japan-Brazil.
Here is a recap of the action from yesterday, July 11, when the next-to-last matches in group play for both men and women were played.
The match between Australia and China ended in a 3-0 win for the Green Continent. In the first set, the two teams were running neck-and-neck, and in the third set the Chinese came close to stretching the match to a fourth set. But the Aussies managed to clamp down on their opponents and pull of a decisive three-set win. The Australians must now prepare for their match against Brazil, which promises to be really intense.
South Korea had no trouble dispatching the Americans in three sets. The U.S. didn't put up any hint of resistance until the third set, the score of which was 25-22.
As a reminder, the 2013 Universiade volleyball competitions are being held July 6-16 at the Bustan, Zilant, Olympiets and Tulpar complexes at the Saint-Petersburg Volleyball Centre.
Two sets of medals will be awarded in the team competitions. A total of 428 athletes from 28 countries submitted applications to take part in the volleyball competition.
