Kazan Sabantuy - volunteers' vision

The Tatar national holiday Sabantuy gathered as many residents of Kazan, Universiade guests, so volunteers are helping in the organisation of the World University Games.

Sabantuy is the favourite national holiday. It has been being celebrated for a long time and in nowadays world its popularity isn't decreasing but, vice versa, increasing. Old traditions of this holiday are gradually enlarging by modern ones, but, anyway, the main procedure of the celebrations is kept unchanged.

This year Sabantuy in Kazan took place during the 27th Summer Universiade. Therefore there were young representatives of the foreign countries from all five continents. Many Universiade guests came to Sabantuy in national costumes. They enriched the atmosphere of this ancient holiday with the particular flavour. On the Sabantuy stages they danced, took photographs and sang songs in their native languages with Kazan citizens.

Among viewers of Kazan Sabantuy there appeared the volunteers not only from regions of Russia, but also from other countries who got special places on stands. Guests of Tatarstan capital visited this holiday first time, and that's why as volunteers commented the celebration turned out to be very bright and interesting.

Guests of Kazan witnessed a unique spectacle. Colourful costumes, talented performers, astonishing decorations appeared in view of Sabantuy visitors. The performances of Tatarstan pop stars, workshops in making boots (valenki), exhibition of folk trades, tasting of the national cuisine were available for all guests. And, of course, it wasn't complete without traditional competitions and contests: tug of war, belt wrestling, and horse racing.

Beside this all volunteers could enjoy the national Tatarstan cuisine practically free. Also national workshops were organised where anyone could cook Tatar brushwood (chak chak) and forge flowers. Each volunteer could also take part in excursions organised by more than 20 regions of Tatrstan.

After the holiday special shuttles were organised for volunteers to bring foreigners to hostels.

And, of course, it is impossible not to mention the extraordinary atmosphere of the holiday where all walls between residents of different countries fell and Sabantuy united them all. Artists and speakers used English and Russian along with the national language for better understanding between guests.

Sabantuy is the national holiday of the Republic of Tatarstan, and for the first time it gathered so multi-national audience from all over the world.
