Kostenko defeated Olena Sayko from Ukraine in the final of the tournament in the weight category up to 60 kg with the score 4-0.

"The victory at the Universiade, when sambo is included in the competition programme for the first time, is a unique opportunity. And I'm very happy to be here and win - for the first and maybe the last time. And I will go undefeated, and the string "weight category up to 60 kg, the first place - Yana Kostenko (Russia)" will remain in the history of the Universiades forever," said with a smile Kostenko. "For me, the Universiade in Kazan is like the Olympic Games. We all hope that sambo will remain in the programme of the Universiade. But if the discipline will be removed from the programme, then everybody will remember Yana Kostenko," she added. The athlete stressed that she would never get tired to thank the fans who "gave me great support today”. "It is great support that appears as if from nowhere," the athlete continued. "When you have no power and you just want to fall down, and the audience sets the pace and charge your with focused energy, you are re-emerging forces. Huge thank to our fans. They believed in me and were hoping for my victory, and I just did not have a right for an error."
