Kobzev: Russian hockey players did more than they could at Universiade

On Sunday, the national team of Russia was defeated by South Korea (0:5) in the final game and placed second in the tournament. “The girls psyched up for today’s match, and they done everything well, playing their fourth game at such a high level.”

“We did more than we could, by outplaying Japan here. It’s a heroic deed. Our goal was getting to the final, and we did it. Maybe, they felt already satisfied in the final, but it should be acknowledged that playing against South Korea was really difficult. This team ranks seventh, while we occupy the 20th line,” said Kobzev. He noted that in the game with the Korean team at the group stage (Russia was defeated with a score of 1:2) the Russian team “was very close to success”, “five minutes before the end of the game we had a chance to equalise the score level". “We were trying to find our chance, but today they didn’t give us any,” added Kobzev. “It’s a very agile team. Our girls did everything they could today. Korea brought almost their entire main national team to the Universiade." The expert said that the Russian team wanted to outplay their rivals in the final “being driven by patriotism and domestic spectators”, "but the spectators had the opposite effect, and the girls could not concentrate". “Firstly, it is the first time that we participate in the competitions at such level, and, secondly, we play at such speeds very rarely. At the European Championships, we play in group B, where teams, unlike in group A, play at the same speeds as our team. The championship of Russia also demonstrates low speeds. There, players have time to think and to see what’s going on, but our rivals did not allow us doing that. That’s why we made childish mistakes," concluded Kobzev.
