On 11 February 2011, Kazan State Medical University signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

Kazan State Medical University, one of top universities of Russia, was founded in May 1814 as a medical department of Kazan Imperial University. In 1930 the department gained the status of an independent institute and was transformed into a university in 1994.

The university takes its pride in its faculty which includes over 700 researchers and teachers (594 of them have academic degrees and 170 are doctors of sciences). A total of 3,700 students, 525 interns and 171 PhD candidates are enrolled in Kazan State Medical University.

The university’s international activities are coordinated by the Centre for International Education and Cooperation. As part of the joint programmes, it conducts seminars, conferences, summer language schools, medical internships under the auspices of IFMSA - International Federation of Medical Students' Association, for senior students, interns and resident physicians.

Sporting events and health-enhancing physical activities are carried out by the department of physical culture, health improving сentre and Medik Sport and Recreation Camp. Besides, the university runs an athletic training student society and 24 sports clubs.

In the build-up to the 27th Summer Universiade, the university has opened a regional centre to train medical and sports volunteers for the Games. The volunteers take part in all citywide and republic-wide events, as well as in interregional and international sports competitions. Moreover, the centre prepares doping control officers and volunteer chaperones.
