On September 20th, 2011 Mari State University signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

Mari State University, one of the youngest classical universities of Russia and largest educational and scientific centres of the Republic of Mari El and Volga Federal District, was founded on January 1st, 1972.

In January 2008 Mari State University and Nadezhda Krupskaya Teachers Training Institute merged together. Mari Agrarian College became the branch of Mari State University in January 2010.

The University includes 10 faculties, 6 institutes, over 11,000 students, a highly-skilled teaching staff that amounts to about 1,000 people, including 124 Doctors of Science and professors, over 560 PhDs and associate professors.

Mari State University pays great attention to coordination of activities connected with physical culture, health improvement, grassroots sports, training of student squads for various competitions, management of sports clubs, enhancement of the role and significance of sports event organisers in staging sports events. The University owns 11 sport venues. 

Futsal, table tennis, aerobics, shooting, basketball tournaments traditionally take place at the University. Cross-country skiing races for students, graduate students and teachers of Mari State University are held annually in Korta Village.

Student volunteers of Mari State University actively participate in various contests held ahead of the 2013 Summer Universiade. The sports volunteer centre was opened at the University in 2006 to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles among students.
