On September 17th, 2011 the Ogarev Mordovia State University signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

Mordovia State University was founded in 1931 as the Agronomy Pedagogical Institute. In 2010 the Ogarev Mordovia State University was granted the status of a national research institute. It has 21 sports facilities at its disposal.

Teaching staff comprises 1,655 people, including 225 doctors of sciences and professors, 1,089 PhDs and associate professors. The University teaches 24,290 students, including 300 foreign citizens.

The university implements educational programmes of higher and post-university professional education across an array of fields, carries out fundamental and applied scientific researches in a wide variety of sciences. 

The Ogarev Mordovia State University conducts an active work aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people. The university is a winner (2010) and runner-up (2011, 2012) of the University of Healthy Lifestyle All-Russian Contest.

The Volunteer Centre was created at the Ogarev Mordovia State University in 2010. Its trainees took part in the 3rd edition of the Russia – Country of Sports International Sports Forum (2011), World Race Walking Cup (2012), 2012 Republican Student Spring Festival and other high-profile events. The volunteers also participated in the finals of the Faces of the Universiade All-Russian Contest and Polyglot 2013 All-Russian Competition. 10 students of the University were shortlisted for volunteer positions in such functional areas as Victory Ceremonies Staff, Attachés and Language Service Volunteers.

Olga Kaniskina. World athletics champion (2007, 2009), silver medal winner at the 2007 European Cup in the 20km race walk, Beijing 2008 Olympic champion in the 20km race walk, 2010 European champion, silver medallist at the 2012 IAAF World Race Walking Cup, silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
