Today the University teaches over 12,000 students. Its headcount includes more than 700 academic teaching employees (468 of them have scientific degrees, 108 are doctors of sciences).

The University is also involved in active promotion of a healthier lifestyle, grassroots sports development and sportsmanship enhancement among students, postgraduate students and teaching staff; it always competes in the regional University Games and takes only top places. Every year the University holds the Spartakiade with student athletes competing in 14 sports; the relay race and cross-country skiing are also organised for students, postgraduate students and teaching staff.

Samara State University has at its disposal the following sports facilities: a playing field, a weightlifting hall, an aerobics room, a ski depot, a swimming pool, a stadium.

The University has been strongly contributing to the promotion of the ideas of the 27th Summer Universiade. Its students take an active part in nationwide contests and most of them are offered volunteer roles during official ceremonies held ahead of the 27th Summer Universiade.
