On 13 September 2012, Saratov State University named after N.G.Chernyshevsky (SSU) signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

Saratov State University was founded in 1909. In 2010, the university was granted the national research university status.

One of Russia’s oldest universities includes 22 departments, 6 educational institutions, branch in the city of Balashov, 2 colleges, and various research and development structures. The total number of students currently studying at SSU is more than 24,000.

At present there are up to 2,000 highly-qualified faculty members at Saratov State University including 293 Doctors of Sciences and 805 of those who hold PhD degrees in different areas.

A wide range of international activities are carried out in the framework of inter-university agreements with more than 50 higher education institutions of Europe, Asia and the United States. The university also operates the Research and Education Centre for Cooperation with the CIS and Baltic States and the largest Turkish Language and Cultural Centre in Russia. One of the key lines of SSU’s international activities is the participation in the programme of the Oxford Russia Fund.

Special consideration is given to the development and promotion of university sports.

The sports infrastructure of the university includes 11 gyms, 3 fitness facilities, a ski depot, a health camp and a sports complex with a swimming pool. There are 33 sports clubs at the university; such sports as tourism, mountaineering and rock climbing are actively promoted. The university is regularly among the winners of the Samara Region Universities Spartakiade.

Such famous students and PhD candidates of the university as Natalia Lobova, the silver medallist at the World Rowing and Canoe Sprint Championships and finalist of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Sergey Ulegin, the silver medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, double world champion and five-time European canoe sprint champion, were announced as Ambassadors for the 27th Summer Universiade Kazan 2013.

The Volunteer Centre, that is run by the university, coordinates students’ volunteer activities in a wide range of fields. One of its largest projects – A Volunteer’s School – carries out a variety of events and contests, such as I’m a Volunteer, Map of Kindness, Give Your Smile to Everyone and many others.
