On 7 September 2011, Orenburg State University signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade Kazan 2013 and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

The history of Orenburg State University dates back to 1955 when the evening department of Kuibyshev Industrial Institute was opened. Since 1996 the education institution has been operating as a classical multi-profile university.

Today, over 270 doctors of sciences and 1,500 PhDs are involved in the teaching activities, with up to 38,000 students being enrolled in the university.

Orenburg State University has opened the Kazan 2013 volunteer centre whose activities are aimed at encouraging students to volunteer during the 2013 Summer Universiade. Students of the university took part in and won Polyglot 2013 and Faces of the Universiade, the projects organised by the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate. Performing ensembles of Orenburg State University were selected via the 2012 Student Spring Open Republican Festival to be part of the Cultural Universiade at Games time.
