Founded in 1804 as Kazan Imperial University, Kazan Federal University is now one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Russia. In 1918 it was transformed into Kazan State University, and in 2009 it received the federal status. In the first decades of its existence the university turned into a large educational and scientific centre. An array of new research areas and schools emerged within it: mathematical, chemical, medical, linguistic, geological, geobotanical and others. Total enrollment at the university is over 35,000 students. The faculty and teaching staff include over 3,000 people (2,085 of them have academic degrees and 442 are doctors of sciences).

Kazan Federal University closely cooperates with the world’s most prestigious academic research centres, conducts joint scientific studies with international partners, creates scientific laboratories, develops and maintains academic mobility of its students and teaching staff, hosts international scientific conferences and workshops. The university also operates 21 international centres.

Kazan Federal University is also actively involved in promoting a healthier way of life and spreading the ideas of sports among the student body, graduate students and academic staff. Every year the university hosts the traditional spring relay and final games of the inter-university basketball tournament.

The university has 13 sports facilities, the largest of them being the Moskva Sports Complex, Bustan Sports Complex and UNICS Sports and Cultural Complex.

The university makes a significant contribution to promoting the ideas of the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade.

Students of the Sports Volunteer Centre and KFU – Planet of Kind People Volunteer Centre render voluntary service to FISU delegations and take active part in large forums and competitions that have been held in the city of Kazan over the past few years.
