On 18 September 2012 the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) signed a cooperation agreement with the Executive Directorate of the 27th Summer Universiade Kazan 2013 and received the official status of ‘HEI of the 2013 Summer Universiade’.

The Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod was established on January 17, 1916 as one of three People's Universities in Russia. It was the first higher education institution in Nizhni Novgorod. In 1918 UNN acquired the status of a state university (first Soviet university), with the national research university status being granted in 2009.

The university currently enrolls about 40,000 students, including 1,000 PhD candidates and doctoral degree candidates. Over 1,500 employees, including 300 doctors of sciences and 900 PhDs are involved in the scientific and research work.

As for its international activity, the university has launched such unique programmes as the Russian-French University and Russian-Italian University. It is part of the European Association of Universities (DEAN) and has its member in the Board of the European University Association (EUA).

Students of the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod participated in the Faces of the Universiade project, a contest aimed at selecting the victory ceremonies staff. Besides, they constantly contribute to various volunteer projects thanks to their involvement in the activities of the Volunteer Centre which has been opened at the university.
